Seeking a quieter, more scenic and interesting region to live in, Jill Lindeblom moved to Prince Edward County from Toronto in 2017.
She knew she was truly home when she lit a fire in the fireplace and poured herself a yummy glass of local merlot in her new Main Street home in Bloomfield. Later that first year, the nightime Christmas parade that passed by her front door sealed the deal. “I’d never experienced such local engagement – it was magical.” But a near fatal incident in the winter of 2022 really showed Jill the true meaning of community. A quick afternoon cross-country ski venture with her partner Alan at Sandbanks Provincial Park turned near deadly when they discovered their dog “Sugar” was missing upon returning to their car. They removed their skiis, split up and headed in different directions to try and find her. As day turned to dusk and dusk turned to nightfall, Jill became disoriented and lost her bearings, inadvertently walking deeper into the hellish icy terrain of the Dunes area of the park. When she didn’t return, her partner called 911. A search by the Prince Edward O.P.P., the K-9 unit, the O.P.P.’s aviation service and the Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services commenced at 7 PM. They searched for over 2 hours never imagining she would head north in the park following the dangerous shoreline. Ill-dressed for the weather, disoriented and without her cell phone, she inadvertently walked for over 4 hours through deep snow 7.5 KM from the departure point. Freezing, exhausted and scared as both the light and temperatures dropped, she finally heard swans in the harbour near the village of Wellington. Yelling across the ice, she was able to get the attention of passers-by who called for 9-1-1 for help. Fire & Rescue teams inflated a rescue sled and slid her across the ice to the Wellington town dock. An ambulance took her to the hospital where she spent two nights suffering from exposure and hypothermia. She was lucky to be alive. At the invitation of the local Fire Marshall at the time who headed the search & rescue efforts, Jill bravely went on the air at 99.3 County FM to thank everyone who came to help find her, and to advise residents how to better prepare for a winter outing to avoid what happened to her. |

Living in Prince Edward County has given the ever effervescent Jill a new appreciation for living in this close-knit community.
More than ever, she enjoys having quality time to stop and smell the roses, to golf (her favourite sport) ... and to share precious time with family and friends. “Health is Wealth” is her new mantra. |
