Artist Statement:
From the very beginning when I was thinking about this painting, it was important to me that I use a real dress that someone wore and had a life in. I wanted that energy to be a part of the painting. I don’t know to whom the dress belonged to; I purchased it at a vintage store. As soon as I saw it - I knew it was the one I wanted to turn into a sculptural painting. I was moved by the lyrics of the song "Borrowed Tune". As I started to paint, I felt I wanted to awaken the emptiness. The dress is right here waiting for someone - waiting on the bed, in solitude, hoping. The folds are carefully set in place and refined. I wanted to imbue a feeling that it was casually laid down with care. At the same time, I tried to give the dress a sense of emerging from the background, rising up to meet love. Now, when I stand back and ponder this painting, I can almost see someone about to put it on. |
