In 2024, ANDARA Gallery presented“Barnscapes” - an exhibition of new works by Canadian fine art photographer and digital artist, Tara Wilkinson.
 
“Steeped in history, barns are an essential part of the rural landscape. They’ve long been used for shelter, storage, production … and as a gathering place for the community. There is something about a barn that evokes a feeling of comfort and sanctuary.
 
Built during a golden age of barn construction, they are straightforward in their design yet were built strong enough to last for generations ... even centuries. Barns are even more remarkable when you consider the timber that was felled and hand hewn, the rudimentary tools that were used and the community it took to construct them … often in just one weekend.
 
It is an astonishing fact that just 150 years ago, 85 out of 100 people in North America lived on a farm. The same cannot be said now … nor are we ever likely to see it again. Today, barns are vanishing rural landmarks that are an important part of our heritage. They deserve to be preserved and protected.

Every barn (and farm animal) is beautiful in its own way. Every barn holds a story about courage, strength, craftsmanship, ingenuity and perseverance. If only their walls could talk. My hope is that these images will help give voice to their incredible stories.

This exhibition was dedicated to the memory of Tara’s dear friend and County lifetime farmer, the late Clifford Foster of Fosterholm Farms which celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2024.
