Artist Statement:
"Popsicles are messy, that’s just the way it is. As a kid, I loved all the flavours, the colours, the feeling of the cold popsicle in your hands as you snapped it in the centre – especially during a hot summer’s day. Popsicles remind me of colourful crayons all in a row. It’s all part of being a kid - but why do we give them up so soon as we grow older? This is a painterly sketch done with the help of my inner child. I was cavalier about how I created it. I wanted to treat this painting as a serious portrait of a popsicle. I wanted it to feel as if it had to be created quickly before it melted. It’s ironic that it’s painted with hot melted beeswax (when melting and spontaneity is important). If only I could paint using a popsicle on a hot summer’s day." |
